This is a photo of the first step in making an individual flan. This particular recipe calls for you to put melted sugar in the bottom of the ramiken that you cook the flan in. After it's done baking the melted sugar creates a syrup that can be poured over the flan.
There's a small island about 3 hours south of Baltimore called Chincoteague Island. It's a beautiful spot to go on vacation and as an added bonus there's a wild life refuge about 5 minutes from the Island. While driving around the refuge, I spotted this lone crane wandering in a pond, looking for a snack.

I think this is probably my favorite photo that I've taken. There's a bit of sadness and loneliness to it.
I love the taste of pumpkins and can't wait until they're in season every year. This meal was born of my desire for something warm and pumpkiny. I used cinnamon, ginger, garlic, onions, nutmeg, bacon, and peppercorns to season the soup.
